One Piece Devil Fruits - All you Need to Know

Any One Piece fan needs to know what a Devil Fruit is, also known as Akuma No Mi – even more so now that the show is about to get a live-action version produced by Netflix.

They gained a lot of prominence in the universe created by Eiichiro Oda for a simple reason: they are the origin of the powers of several characters, whether good or bad.

Luffy, the great protagonist of One Piece, makes his body turn into rubber thanks to the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which has become the most well-known Devil Fruit among fans.

As time passed, fans got to know several other variations of Devil Fruits. Some are not that powerful, while others have made some enemies of Luffy and his friends very strong.

Check out below an explanation about all the Devil Fruits of One Piece.

What Are The Devil Fruits?

Devil Fruits are mystical and mysterious fruits found throughout One Piece's world. Whoever consumes one gains superhuman powers and abilities, but at a cost: losing the ability to swim (permanently).

It is believed that Devil Fruits were created by a sea demon and that the secret to their power is hidden along the Great Line. As they are rare, many people believe they are just a myth. This was the case for Nami, who only believed in their existence after seeing them face to face.

Also, because they are rare, Devil Fruits are very valuable in the market, and the main combatants in the world of One Piece have already consumed some to get stronger. One cost 100,000 Bellies, while the Ope Ope no Mi was valued at 5 million.

However, many people consider the powers granted by the fruits to be a kind of curse or magic. Because of this, some people who have consumed them are often considered aberrations and are not very well regarded.

Despite being fruit, those who have eaten a Devil Fruit claim that it tastes terribly wrong and would be similar to taking some form of poison.

Devil Fruits come in various sizes, shapes, and colors. A common feature of them is that they have a kind of whirlpool on their outside. The exception is artificial devil fruit, which has circles (or rings, if you prefer) on the outside.

Just take a single bite of the fruit to acquire its powers; soon after, it completely loses its function. That is: more than one person can't receive the same power.

Devil Fruits also often affect the clothes of those who consume them (don't forget that Luffy's clothes are never affected when he uses his powers) and even his surroundings.

According to Eiichiro Oda, the same power of a Devil Fruit can exist simultaneously, but two fruits of the same type cannot be present in the world.

A person can only use the power of one fruit. If you try to consume a second one, it dies. The only exception was the pirate Blackbeard, who could use the power of two at once.

If a user of any Devil Fruit power dies, the power is reborn in any fruit, which takes on the appearance of the original. The exception is artificial ones, which grow on trees.

Types of Akuma No Mi

One Piece has already revealed to fans three different types of Devil Fruits.

Paramecia: The most common type of Devil Fruit. The Devil Fruits Paramecia give their users superhuman powers, as with Luffy, who can turn his body into rubber. Some also allow you to modify people, objects, and surroundings and generate and manipulate some substances.

Zoan: Users of Zoan-type fruits can transform into hybrids of humans and animals. There are three divisions of the Devil Fruits no Mi Zoan.

  • Ancient Zoan: The user transforms into an extinct animal, such as a dinosaur.
  • Mystic Zoan: The user transforms into a mythological animal like a dragon.
  • Artificial Zoan: The user permanently gains the characteristics of an animal. However, they only have a 10% chance of success, as they are artificial fruits.

Logia: The rarest type of Devil Fruit, but also considered the most powerful. It allows its users to create and manipulate elements of nature, whether solid (such as ice), liquid (such as mud), gas (such as smoke), and those that generate energy (such as fire and lightning). Additionally, the user becomes intangible when transforming, can control their body even if it is in pieces, and can even manipulate things related to their element (e.g., make electricity move through conductive objects).

There are still three canonical fruits that do not have an exact classification:

  • Tama Tama no Mi: Gives its user the power of their body having the same composition as an eggshell, which, if opened, creates an even stronger yolk at the next opportunity. With each shell regeneration, the user transforms into a hybrid of man and chicken.
  • The unnamed fruit consumed by Laffitte allows him to gain wings to fly.
  • The nameless fruit that Karasu consumed causes his body and clothes to transform into killer crows.

One Piece has featured 140 Devil Fruits (82 Paramecia, 44 Zoan, and 11 Logia, in addition to the three without an official type). Another 49 have non-canon status. [Note: This data was last revised in September 2022].
